Top 5 downpipe tips
- For straight cuts wrap a sheet of paper round the pipe so the join is straight and use it as a guide.
- Use an electric drill with correct size bit for masonry walls.
- Use pipe clips to secure shoes and pipe sockets in place.
- Remember to use pipe clips within a minimum of 1 metre gaps.
- Use a hopper or branch if you need to run more than one outlet into one downpipe
- Your gutter will protrude from the wall therefore the distance back to the wall needs to be bridged by the relevant angled offset bends linked together (Fig 6).
- The offset bend will then fit to a downpipe. Attach the downpipe to the wall using a pipe clip.
Continue to fit the remaining length (s) of pipe in the same way using pipe sockets to join lengths together.
- Some downpipes are fitted using a universal hopper which more than one pipe can drain into.
- If a downpipe from a second gutter needs to join the main downpipe you can use a branch to bring them together.
- At the end of the downpipe fit a shoe to direct the water into the drain (Fig 7). This need to be supported by a pipe clip.
